Section 2: Introduction and Safety Information
What is the Sixth Sense?
The Sixth Sense is a wearable device and smartphone app designed to assist you with navigation and object detection. It provides hands-free navigation through speakers and haptic feedback, helping you make daily trips with more confidence and less stress.
Important: White Cane Required
The Sixth Sense is designed to be used WITH your white cane, not to replace it. You must be trained and confident in proper white cane use before using Sixth Sense. The device detects objects above knee level, while your white cane continues to detect ground-level obstacles.
Key Features
- Object Detection: Alerts you to objects above knee level through haptic vibrations
- Navigation: Turn-by-turn voice directions in your preferred language
- Points of Interest: Announces nearby locations like shops and bus stops
- Customizable: Adjust detection zones, range, and feedback to your preferences
Safety Warnings
- Always use Sixth Sense together with your white cane
- Charge only with a 5-volt, 1-amp adapter that meets IEC/EN 60950-1 standards
- Do not immerse the device in water or other liquids
- Keep away from excessive heat sources
- The device performs best between 0 and 40 degrees Celsius
- Strong outdoor sunlight may reduce infrared sensor range - ultrasonic sensors continue working
Section 3: Getting Started - Quick Setup Guide
Follow these steps to set up your Sixth Sense device for the first time.
Step 1: Charge Your Device
Before first use, fully charge your Sixth Sense:
- Connect the USB-C cable to your Sixth Sense device
- Connect the other end to a 5-volt, 1-amp power adapter
- Plug the adapter into a wall socket
- The LED indicator will blink while charging
- When fully charged, the LED will remain steady
- Disconnect the charger once charging is complete
Step 2: Download the Sixth Sense App
You'll need the smartphone app to access all features:
- Open the App Store on iPhone or Google Play Store on Android
- Search for "Sixth Sense" or visit the app store link provided in your package
- Download and install the app
- Open the app when installation is complete
Step 3: Power On Your Device

Once paired, your phone and Sixth Sense will automatically connect when both devices have Bluetooth enabled and are within range.
Initial Configuration
After pairing, you'll complete the onboarding process:
- Name: Enter your name
- Measurement System: Choose metric or imperial units
- User Height: Enter your height for optimal detection
- Language: Select your preferred language for voice feedback
Recommended: Complete the App Tutorial
We strongly recommend using the interactive app tutorial. It lets you practice with features, experience simulated alerts, and learn how to access key functions safely before using the device while walking.
Section 6: Object Detection Features
All object detection controls are on the right panel of your device.
Turning Object Detection On and Off
To toggle hazard alerts: Double-press the wheel button on the right panel.
Adjusting Detection Range
You can increase or decrease how far ahead the device detects objects:
- Press the wheel button on the right panel once
- Rotate the wheel forward to increase distance
- Rotate the wheel backward to decrease distance
Understanding Alert Types
The device uses different haptic vibrations and sounds to tell you about objects:
Far Alert
What it means: Object detected more than 1 meter ahead
Feedback: Soft buzz on the back of your neck
Near Alert
What it means: Object detected less than 1 meter ahead
Feedback: Strong buzz on the back of your neck
Side Alert
What it means: Object detected to your left or right
Feedback: Buzz on the corresponding side (left or right). If both sides detect objects, both sides will buzz alternately
Exclusion Zone Alert
What it means: Something is within arm's reach
Feedback: Short sound from the speakers
Exclusion Zone Off
What it means: You've been near a persistent obstacle (like a wall) for more than 3 seconds, so alerts pause
Feedback: Descending chime
Exclusion Zone On
What it means: The persistent obstacle disappeared, alerts resume
Feedback: Ascending chime
Blocked Sensor
What it means: Something (like a scarf) is covering a sensor
Feedback: Repetitive high-pitch sound - check and clear the obstruction
Important: Exclusion Zone Behavior
When you move your hands naturally in front of the sensors, or when objects are very close (within arm's reach), the device temporarily mutes object detection to avoid unnecessary alerts. You'll hear a short sound to confirm this. When you move away or lower your hands, normal detection automatically resumes.
